What is OCIA?

The Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA) is a communal journey of faith for adults who are seeking to become full members of the Catholic Church. Rooted in the practices of the early Church, this process invites individuals into a deeper relationship with Christ through prayer, formation, and participation in the life of the parish community.

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops describes OCIA as a process in which participants "undergo conversion as they study the Gospel, profess faith in Jesus and the Catholic Church, and receive the sacraments." Restored after the Second Vatican Council, OCIA reflects the ancient rhythms of preparation and initiation that guided the early Christian community.

OCIA uses the language of the early Church to describe those on this path:

Catechumens are individuals who have never been baptized and are preparing to receive the Sacraments of Initiation—Baptism, Confirmation, and the Eucharist.
Candidates are those who have already been baptized in another Christian tradition and are now seeking full communion with the Catholic Church through Confirmation and the Eucharist.

All are Welcome!

The OCIA journey is more than instruction—it is an experience of community, prayer, and transformation. It involves:
  • Personal reflection and spiritual growth
  • Faith-sharing and learning within a supportive group
  • Participation in liturgical rites that mark key steps along the way
  • Gradual integration into the life and worship of the parish
  • Whether you are unbaptized, baptized in another Christian denomination, or simply curious about the Catholic faith, you are welcome here.

Our OCIA Team | Walking Together in Faith

Those journeying through the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA) are never alone. They are accompanied by a dedicated team of sponsors, catechists, and parish companions who offer guidance, prayerful support, and encouragement throughout the process.

Our OCIA team shares the joy of their own faith and helps inquirers grow in their understanding of Catholicism. Team members walk side by side with those discerning whether to join the Catholic Church, many of whom are preparing to receive one or more of the Sacraments of Initiation: Baptism, Eucharist, and Confirmation.

Through listening, teaching, and sharing personal witness, the team helps create a welcoming and supportive environment where seekers can explore God’s call and become part of our vibrant Catholic community.
